L'idea che un forte terremoto produca un periodo di maggiore attività sismica era alla base della teoria della "accelerated plate tectonics" proposta da Don Anderson quasi 40 anni fa:
"It is proposed that plate motions accelerate after great decoupling earthquakes and that most of the observed plate motions occur during short periods of time, separated by
periods of relative quiescence."
